The primary attraction of the city of Mumbai is the Gateway of India. This is a colossal basaltic arched structure, 26 meters in height, located on the shores of the Arabian Sea. It was built under the direction of architect George Wittet in honor of the visit of the English King George the Fifth. Construction began in 1911.
